Hamilton Island Race Week
intro:
Salty Dingo has been covering Hamilton Island Race Week since 2014, and has served as the official Race Week photographer for approximately eight years.
Our role covers the full event — on-water racing photography, dockside coverage and aerials from a helicopter — across a full week of competition in the Whitsundays.
This is not a freelance gig. Hamilton Island Race Week is a professionally run event with a production standard to match. Hamo provides everything we need to do the job properly: helicopter and pilot, camera boat and driver, golf buggy, hotel, flights, dedicated workspace with a large monitor, a detailed brief and a schedule that accounts for every element of the week. We arrive ready to shoot, not ready to figure it out.
That level of organisation from the client's side is rare. A decade of working together is rarer still — and it shows in the work.
The Brief
Hamilton Island Race Week demands complete photographic coverage of one of Australia's most visually spectacular and logistically complex sailing events.
The content needs to:
Capture racing action on the water across a full week of competition
Cover multiple classes and course areas simultaneously
Document the social programme, prize givings and off-water atmosphere
Deliver images for daily media distribution, competitor purchases and brand use
Reflect the scale, prestige and natural beauty of the Whitsundays setting
Planning & On-Water Capability
Covering Race Week properly requires preparation that begins weeks before the first start.
Working from Hamilton Island's detailed brief and schedule, Salty Dingo coordinates across:
Course area logistics and camera boat positioning
Helicopter scheduling around race day conditions and airspace
Daily delivery workflows for competitor galleries and media releases
Accreditation and coordination with event organisers
When a client provides a helicopter, a dedicated boat, a large-monitor edit suite and a schedule that has been thought through in advance, the creative and logistical energy goes entirely into the work. That is exactly how Race Week operates — and it is a significant part of why the results are consistently strong.
Our Role On-Site
Salty Dingo covers all elements of the event, including:
On-water racing photography from the camera boat, tracking lead boats, starts, mark roundings and fleet moments
Aerial photography from helicopter across the race course and Whitsunday Islands
Dockside and marina coverage — arrivals, debrief moments, boat preparation
Evening social events, sponsor activations and the prize giving ceremony
Competitor portrait sessions and team photography
The objective is consistent across every element — capture the race, the place and the people.

Why It Matters
Hamilton Island Race Week is not just a sailing event. It is one of Australia's most recognisable sporting and lifestyle occasions — a week that draws international competitors, major sponsors, media coverage and thousands of spectators to one of the world's great sailing venues.
The visual content produced here serves multiple audiences simultaneously: competitors reliving the racing, sponsors requiring brand-aligned assets, media needing publication-ready images, and organisers building the event's reputation year on year.
Getting it right requires more than photographic skill. It requires understanding the sport, reading the conditions, knowing where the moment will happen before it does — and having the operational capability to be there.
Salty Dingo has been doing exactly that since 2014.
The Result
A complete week of high-quality photography, delivered daily to competitors, media and organisers — and archived for long-term event and brand use.
For Salty Dingo, Hamilton Island Race Week represents everything we do best: marine expertise, operational precision, and storytelling that captures a place and a moment in full.
Salty Dingo — on the water, in the air, and always where it matters.
